The problem
Sometimes you just need that one PDF from your Mac while you are out. Syncing everything to a cloud for that is a lot of machinery, and your files end up on someone else's servers.
Why it works
- Your files on demand
- That one PDF is a tap away, without syncing your whole Mac to a cloud first.
- Nothing extra to set up
- No new app on your phone and no account. A browser and the link are enough.
- You stay in control
- You approve the phone once, and you can stop sharing any time the link shouldn't work anymore.
How to set it up
Share the folder using Share with ordner.link, keep Who can open it on Ask me and set Link expires to Never.
Open the link on your phone, type a name and choose Always Allow in the notification on your Mac.
Keep the link you received in a password manager and open it from there. Notes apps often sync to a cloud. Don't bookmark the opened page: its address no longer holds the key.
What to keep in mind
Your Mac must be awake and online, so this doesn't replace sync for files you need everywhere. If your phone's browser clears its data, you will be asked to allow it again.
Questions
Is it encrypted?
Yes. Files are end-to-end encrypted between your Mac and your phone's browser.
Does it work on Android and iPhone?
Yes. All you need is a modern browser.
